Uruguay


 24th October 2017.

We got here OK

Its was a very nervous moment when watching the  airport carousel in Montevideo, wandering if any of our luggage actually boarded at Heathrow. However, after everyone else's bags had done at least 3 laps our battered old bags with blue string around them started to show up. It wouldn't have been a big problem as Pat's hand luggage was full of enough underwear and drugs to last a few weeks .

Within a few minutes, having been robbed by the airport "Bureau de Change," we were spat out into the main building to be greeted by our "Airbnb" host Santiago who was waving a plaque with our names on it.

The Journey to Uruguay was pretty unremarkable although very long. Our 4 hours stopover, between two 10 hours flights,  at Miami was completely swallowed up with the never ending Disney style queues that we had to endure one after the other. 

Santiago's home is in the posh end of town in the region of Pocitos near the coast of the Rio de la Plata 




His Colonial style house with its secret garden was a treasure trove of antiquities and curios and Santiago himself was a bit of an expert on all things Uruguayan. Sharing the countries Culture and history was his forte. Breakfast in the garden with the Humming Birds was nice. 







Montevideo wasn't quite what we expected . It has a very European colonial feel to it and you could easily imagine yourself standing in any Spanish or Portuguese City, except that everything here is twice the price . It is a very expensive country and its hard to work out how the locals survive . 

With jet lag behind us and bus passes at the ready we set out to the city, eventually ending up in the old port area which although still a working docks, has a touristy restaurant area which is very nice . Steak is at the heart of every meal here.

The truck isn't due to arrive for a few weeks so our main reason to come to Uruguay early was to enrol in a local language school and "try" and learn some Spanish. Well we did the first bit, not sure how much we have learnt so far. 






Our teacher "Edilson" has been tested to his limits. 
I am sure that if he has to explain the the difference between "Ser" and "Estar" to me again he will have a melt down.

We have managed to meet our Shipping agent "Eduardo Kessler " who has an office very near to the port where our truck will arrive. He has explained the proceedure and tasked us with various things to complete before its arrival. 

We shipped with Grimaldi using Martin McGowan of IVSS UK as our agent in the UK. Martin has been fantastic and has held our hand throughout the whole process. 

However, Gimaldi's receiving agent in the Montevideo called KMA can only be described as deceiptful and greedy. The problem is that if you are shipping from the UK you have very little choice of carrier so you need to be prepared for this . I must point out that KMA's issues have no connection with IVSS who I would recommend without hesitation.

In a nutshell we went to KMA to pay our fees for  the process of getting our vehicle from the boat to me. (This is not import taxes its merely the unloading of the truck.) The total bill was 960USD . This is alot of money for taking the truck off the boat but we were told that this was the bill . Well we went back a week later to pay it to be told that for no reason they could explain the bill had increased to to just under 1500 USD. The only explanation they could offer was that they now realised that we had a motorbike as well  so it was more work. Can't see how as the motorbike is loaded on the truck. Well after one hour and lots of tourettes, an email from Martin resolved the issue and the price was lowered back to 960 USD.  Now here's the bit that hurts, I asked for a breakdown of what was included in this price and was told that Uruguayan Law forbids them from supplying this ( This is a blatent Lie ) they also told me that the price was high because of the weight of my vehicle ( This is another lie ). 
We have established that the Government owned port Authorities have a fixed price for this service of 248 USD and weight of vehicle isnt a factor in this . 
We also established that KMA were charging is 67 USD to print one peice of paper. ... Ouch.

We are staying with some german friends who are waiting to have their vehicle, which is almost identical to our in weight and size, to arrive from Derban next week via the shipping company Eukor

We found ourselves in their offices later that day and they were presented with a bill for the same service as ours for 248 USD . Their attitude and friendliness was beyond compare to KMA. If only Eukor did a service from Europe. 

But on a more upbeat note we are loving our time with our Great friends Ellen and Perry here in Montevideo 










Well our truck should be with us in a few days from now so hopefully the next post will be about travelling through Uruguay.

The Drums are Calling 


We are currently living a the  Durazno Area of Montevideo. All we can hear every night is Drums.

It would appear that everyone in this area is a member of their local neighbourhood drumming band and that carnival is coming and the competition is on for the best band.

Every night they practice in local halls and houses and at the weekend they parade up and down the streets perfecting their show. Its really impressive



 
              



Sunday 25th November 2017

Cloud 9 is Here. Bring it on

The ship was due to dock on Saturday the 18th of December and due to leave the following day. I knew that Cloud 9 must be unloaded overnight on Saturday.  Non of the offices are open on the Sunday so we had a long wait until Monday to start the release process.

On Sunday afternoon we went to the port area where Grimaldi store there unloaded vehicles to look through the fence at our loved one .  When we got there there were several other campers but no Cloud 9 and nobody to ask. 

During that evening  I convinced myself that our truck was still in a car park in Tilbury, London . Not too much sleep was had that night . 

The next morning I went to KMA ( Grimaldi's local theft agency ) and they assured me that It was here, so i paid the bail money and the process for its release was started.

Our Local guy Eduardo Kessler  was just fantastic ( I would always recommend him ) and by 2pm we were heading to the port to get it.


It transpired that the storage compamy at the port had parked my vehicle inside a building for safe keeping because it had a Scooter on the back.

We still needed to  pay the Customs import duty and get our  Temporary Import Licences for both the Truck and the Motorcycle. The Aduane Officer  ( Customs Agent ) was a bit of a character. We first found him lying fast asleep on a bench near the customs offices.  We woke him up and after  a few minutes and a couple of cigarettes he was ready to go. He really went went for it peaking at about 2 words per minute on a computer that he clealy hated.  30 minutes later two the two permits were handed to me but unfortunately he had recorded my name on all documents ( copied from my passport ) as  Neil British Citizen. I pointed it out and after a small episode of Spanish tourettes he started again. 

By about 5pm we were able to return Cloud 9 and drive her away. 

I must just add that the whole process which had stressed me out ws infact totally without drama and thanks to Eduardo went perfectly smooth

Now here is a strange thing . When we got back to our vehicle there was a photograph tucked under our windscreen wiper . At first i thought it was a Pizza offer or something similar, but when we looked it clearly was someones personal picture with bluetack on the back of it. How it got onto my widscreen is still a mystery. It showed a couple on scooters with small kids. I nearly put in in the bin but for some reason threw it in the truck to be dealt with later . 



This day had been planned with military precision . we were to quickly collect our luggage from the BnB then set off "West" along the coast out of town to a camp area we had identified . So having got the bags I set of "East" in totally the wrong direction. Having realised our mistake we pitched into a small coastal road near the Montevideo Yacht Club as we had heard you can park there. 




Already parked up was a French Overland truck so i knocked on the door to say hello. I looked up to see the same faces that were in the photo I had found earlier on our truck. I couldn't believe it and neither could they. They had lost this picture ealier that day. 

We spent 4 nights parked here sorting things out and really enjoyed meeting  Loic, Raphaelle and their fantastic childeren. 



Our next destination is Colonia which is apparently about 190 Km "west" . Lets hope we get there .

Colonia



Colonia is a  very picturesque walled city on the north shore of the river Plate as it starts to narrow towards Buenos Aries. 

It is very much on the tourist trail. Its history stems from it being a Portuguese Smugglers trading post
but is now a favourite place for lots of young people to hang around watching the sun go down over Buenos Aries.
  


Its about 1 hour on the large propane powered Catamaran to Buenos Aries and about the same to Montevideo in the east.


We managed to park on a very pretty piece of waste ground just outside the city gates on the bank of the river. Our previously mentioned French friends joined us.


The town is full of delightful restaurants and cafes that command the full tourist prices but looked superb.











The wildlife in Uruguay is very different. I am not sure what species this is but we cought it hanging artound our door. I think it was looking for food. It looks like it could do with a plate of chips. Pat said ignore it and it will go away. I was throwing scraps at it when Pat wasn't looking. 



Seriously though. We know our truck is unusual and we often see folks taking pictures of it and even standing infront of it for the shot. Some are subtle and some aren't . This is the best yet.


This was a very relaxing stop for a couple of nights

Where do all the Pies come from "Fray Bentos"


We left Colonia to drive to Fray Bentos via Mercedes. . This would place us very close for the crossing into Argentina .

In our usual style we set off along the coast of the river plate and after about 2 hours we spotted a sign suggesting that a nearby beach could be a great lunch stop.



We pulled up onto the most idyllic beach called Playa Agraciada , The Argentina Border was only a few hundred meters off shore at this point. A large Monument to the 33 Orientales was situated on the beach . These guys were the collection of noble men that carved Uruguay's future .


It was beautiful, so all thoughts of pushing on to Fray Bentos were abondoned and succeded by a picnic on the beach and swimming in the river. 


All was fantastic and we watched the sun set over the Argentinian coast. Then the Mosquitoes arrived. 

These were big bastards with tattoos and knives. Some were two seaters. 

We soon discovered how crap our fly screens were at keeping these little monsters out. 

We were soon re enacting a scene form the Alien movie. 

The good news is that we were victotious  and that they didn't bit me. Pat took lots of hits for the team.

After a quick Lunch in Mercedes we pushed onto Fray Bentos. This is were the mother ship for all pies in cans is situated. We bought a couple with us , with the hope of reuniting them with other family members and setting them free. Despite our best efforts they wouldn't leave our side , so we will be forced to eat them at a later date.  You can but try. 








Most people may not realise that “Fray Bentos” is an fact a region in the North West of Uruguay and not just a brand name of the tinned pies that remind you of your childhood.


We stayed the night in the grounds of what was once probably the biggest meat processing plant on earth on the banks of the Rio Negro. 







In its day it employed over 4000 people per day and could process an entire cow in less than minute .
The factory closed its production in 1979 and has since been made into a Museum, so we did the guided tour .

For those who are interested I will try to relay the brief history that was explained during the tour.
In 1868 the factory was created by a German Chemist called Liebigs and a German Engineer called George Giebert . However the funding for the building came from English Investors . The end result was an enormous processing plant with its own Rail and Boat network that was owned by the British but manged on site by a team of Germans. Together they processed and exported meat preserved in salt to many worldwide locations .

During the 1st World War the factory was producing processed meats to maximum capacity and was in fact supplying tins of meat to both the British and the German Troops in Europe .

During the 1920’s the factory moved away from Salt preservation into Freezing and a new Deep freeze , which is the big premises in the photos was built.
To power a deep freeze of this magnitude required a huge amount of mechanical and electrical energy so adjacent to the freezer building was a massive engineering plant , as shown in the photos , that was used to simply keep the freezers cold . A bi product of this plant was that it also produced electricity to the nearby town . It was the first electricity in Uruguay.





Most of the Generators were made in the UK and were fuelled with British coal that was shipped over on the same boats that took the meat back to the UK .
Production in this way right up until 1979 when the factory was closed and has since become a Unesco World Heritage site
Above that factory were the administration offices which employed about 20 people and this area has been frozen in time .

However, Campbell and Baxters of the UK still produce some of the products under the brand name “Fray Bentos” and “Oxo” .
